Signs of low freon in your AC
Low freon never happens without warning; the unit sends clear signals before it stops cooling altogether:
- Weaker cooling than usual, even after hours of running at a low set temperature.
- Lukewarm or less-cold air coming from the indoor unit.
- Ice or frost on the copper lines or on the indoor unit itself.
- A faint bubbling or hissing sound near the indoor unit or the piping.
- A noticeably higher power bill, because the compressor runs longer for the same result.

Why freon is never "used up"
An air conditioner does not burn freon the way a car burns fuel; the gas circulates in a closed loop between compressor, condenser and evaporator without being consumed. So when a technician measures low pressure it means one thing: the gas leaked out somewhere — a loose flare nut, a cracked weld, a weeping valve, or a corroded coil.
That is why refilling without leak repair is a temporary fix: cooling returns for weeks or months, then fades again, and you pay for the same refill twice. A professional pressurizes the circuit with nitrogen or uses an electronic leak detector, repairs the point, and only then charges the gas.
